Macintosh Office Proposal - 8/15/85

The Macintosh Office Environment

Introduction

This proposal intends to demonstrate the gains in efficiency and quality of output that could be realized in Advanced Products and Testing Services through the implementation of the Macintosh Office Environment.

Just a few of the benefits I envision include reducing paperwork and enhancing the effectiveness of our communications with our clients. I feel these goals can also be achieved with an overall increase in productivity.

The computer is an excellent tool for the business environment. Word processing and graphics software greatly improve our ability to communicate effectively.

Many people however, are intimidated by the computer because of the complexity of the standard user interface which in the past has required the user to memorize alot of cryptic command sequences. Because of this fact, computers remained primarily on the desks of programmers and those who had a great need and therefore a great determination to learn.

The Macintosh however, offers the power of computing to everyone, not just the trained computer specialist. By utilizing a visual interface in which commands appear on menus in English or represented by icons, the user has only to point with the mouse to the command he wishes to effect and click.

This advancement has made Macintosh software almost intuitive to use and greatly reduces the amount of time required to learn to use a particular application. For example, learning to use a word processor on an IBM compatible machine could easily require thirty to forty hours of training while MacWrite can easily be mastered in about two. Once you have learned one program on the Macintosh you have in effect learned the basic techniques for using almost all other applications available for the Mac.
